AbstractThe dyke system in the North of Vietnam with more than 3,000 km of river dyke and 1,500 km of sea dyke have been built for a long time and subjected to hidden threats such as termite nests, week soil zones under the dyke body and its foundation. This study applies the new engineering geophysical techniques to investigate the dyke system in the North of Vietnam with an emphasis on detecting the hidden threats inside the dyke body or weak soil layers underlying the dyke. Additionally the study attempts to propose a systematic approach in dyke investigation, integrating all possible information in to a database. The geophysical and geotechnical methods were applied for dyke investigation in two locations, in Nam Dinh and Thai Binh provinces in the North of Vietnam. The engineering geophysical techniques, i.e., electric imaging, seismic refraction and well logging were performed. Samples from boreholes were collected and geotechnical tests on water content, Atterberg limits and density were done. A GIS based database was built for the dyke system in the North of Vietnam as well as for Nam Dinh Province.
