AbstractHanoi is one of few cities in the world where the entirely water supply comes from groundwater extraction. Nowadays, Hanoi is facing land subsidence has been caused by pumping groundwater. There are only 10 monitoring station for area of up to 900km2. To assess the severity of Hanoi land subsidence ones needs to have an adequate number of monitoring stations. Unfortunately, this number is still very small for Hanoi. Moreover the Hanoi area will be expanded to southwest and west that requires more and more water supply. At present, the extraction rate is about 800,000m3/d and will increase to 1 million m3/d in 2020. The groundwater extraction causes water drawdown in the pumped aquifer. In this study, geological, hydrogeological and especially, geotechnical data related to Hanoi land subsidence were collected. The monitoring records of surface settlement, compression and piezometric head at different depth levels were gathered and processed to investigate the data quality as well as the evidence on Hanoi land subsidence. The main objective of the study is to propose a new approach to help design the location of the new monitoring stations. This procedure is a combination of Kriging and GIS, taking into account the soil characteristic, existing record of land subsidence and development plan of the expanded Hanoi. A soil database for land subsidence analysis was built up using Rockwork2002 and Mapinfo. Three soil profiles in NW- SE direction were generated. The presentation of monitoring data of surface settlement and pore pressure at 10 existing monitoring stations showed that the data quality need to be further improved, but there is no doubt on land subsidence of Hanoi city. As results, 37 new monitoring were proposed. The study results also indicated that the Kriging technique can successfully apply not only for land subsidence prediction but also for monitoring network design.
