AbstractToday's world is based on telecommunications. With the rate of demand for electronic networking equipment, these equipment's have taken a considerable part in global warming. Therefore green networking was introduced in order to become world a better place. In this research I have come up with a power saving MAC protocol using EEE and path selection methods to reduce energy consumption as much as possible. Main objective of this research was to design an energy saving mac protocol which uses less energy to reduce the energy consumption of the network. This will at the end reduce the global warming by network equipment. The protocol was targeted to achieve this objective by combining two existing energy saving protocols. Both path selection method and sleep method are used to select the least energy consuming path and sleep the nodes that are not in use. This reduces the unwanted energy consuming nodes and reduces the total energy consumption. The protocol was tested on NSFNET topology and successfully reduced the energy consumed by a network with 14 nodes. Protocol was compared with IEEE 802.3 CSMA/CD, Path selection method and sleep algorithm and proved that this new protocol consumes less power than other respective protocols. This protocol was tested for both constant and variable bit rates. Best performance of the protocol was visible under variable bit rate.
