Abstract | There are people who live with a severe form of disability and who may not be capable to function independently without assistance. Patients paralysis caused by brain trauma or neuro-muscular defects may find it difficult to accomplish even the simplest task such as moving or lifting a small object, and conditions can be as severe as being paralyzed from below the neck. The idea of this project is to design and produce a system that will not require the use of muscles that are not functional by alternatively using those that are. An exoskeletal assistant device can be used to help patients under paralysis live with a higher form of physical functionality. Facial muscles can be used as a substitute control for those who have higher motor control loss. There are several independent muscles on the face and more so the methods to read such data. This project will take into consideration the reading of facial muscles on the surface of the skin using a sensor designed from flex resistive strips for a control used to drive an exoskeletal assistant device designed to compensate for a paralysis patients loss of motor functionality and skills. |
