Abstract | The operation of wireless communication systems using very low power for the transmission of signals has attracted the interest of applications, such as in the medical field, for the development of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). WBANs are used to monitor and collect information of the human body internally and externally. Thus, the two types of WBANs, wearable BANs which collect information from outside of the human body and implant BANs which collect information from inside of the human body are available. Wearable BANs require comparatively low data rates, such as 0.1 kbps atmost, to operate on since they mostly transmit numerical information and experiences a lower path loss during transmission because the transmitted signal only has to travel along the surface of the body from the transmitter to the receiver. In contrast, implant BANs require a data rates of atleast 1 Mbps inorder to transmit information such as images and also require comparatively higher transmission power since its transmitted signals has to pass through human tissues to the surface of the human body to reach the receiver. The information which reaches the receiver must be in a readable state and therefore the transmission process of the signal must be done to minimize the errors in the received signal as much as possible. For this reason a study (Shi et al., 2014) has conducted a simulation to evaluate the performance of the communication system when PPM technique is used to modulate the transmitted signal. This project has been carried out to determine the performance of the communication system when BPSK and QPSK modulation techniques have been used. In this project, a Matlab simulation has been developed to determine the performance of the WBAN when different modulation techniques are used. This simulation uses the channels modeled by the previous study (Shi et al., 2014) to test the performance. The results of the simulation have been analyzed and evaluated to determine which modulation technique is better to be used in the transmission process of the WBANs with the mentioned channel models. |
