AbstractThe need of an optimal management policy for the development of a stream-aquifer system is a real need all over the world. Especially for a regional stream-aquifer system, an efficient conjunctive use management model is needed in order to manage the water resources (both surface water and groundwater resources) so that the resources can be utilized over the time without degrading the sustainability of the resources. A linear programming based optimization model is developed incorporating a distributed parameter groundwater flow model to find out the optimum water abstraction policy (optimum pumping pattern and surface water supplement) to meet the Dhaka City's growing water needs. In this study, three-dimensional groundwater flow model MODFLOW has been used to generate unit responses of the aquifer systems underlying Dhaka City. The optimization model minimizes the cost of water abstraction from both resources and is subjected to the allowable drawdown, resource availability and demand management constraints. The optimum water abstraction policy from groundwater and surface water for 20 years (1990-2010) are obtained from the management model satisfying the water requirements and maximum allowable drawdown at different locations. It is found that the economic considerations i.e. cost of water abstraction has no significant effect on the water abstractions rather water demand. The results obtained from the model also indicate that the decision variables depend on the space and time.
