AbstractThe exchange of heat to the atmosphere takes place in different directions. The major components of one-dimensional heat exchange are short wave radiation, long wave radiation and radiation from the sea surface in the form of latent and sensible heat flux. This study is concentrated to the pattern of sea surface temperature distribution with the time and the net heat content variation over the gulf of Thailand. The data taken for the study of sea surface temperature is from 1 51 January 1997 to 30 August 1998. The distribution of the sea surface temperature over the gulf of Thailand is not uniform over all month of the year. In the summer season, the northern part of the gulf has higher temperature than the southern part. The same pattern of distribution of the sea surface temperature is also resulted during winter season. On the other hand, the net heat content in summer season is higher towards the southern part of the gulf. Same phenomena have been visualized in winter season over the whole gulf of Thailand. Another important parameter concluded is the time lag between the peak of the net heat content and peak of the sea surface temperature. This time lag ranges from 30 to 40 days in most of the year. The maximum sea surface temperature in the gulf is May and minimum in December. The maximum net heat content is found to be 413.33watt/m2 in July.
