AbstractThe Gulf of Thailand is the most important beach resource of Thailand. Normally the large and heavy industrial factory grew up in the area around the deep-sea ports. Rising of pollutants becomes serious in this region. To understand the characteristic of the water body and the dispersion process of the water quality is very interesting. A Multi-Layer Model of Water Quality is one from many choices to describe the water quality characteristic. This tlu·ee-dimensional model for estuaries and coastal seas, developed by Liu and Nelson (1977), is employed to express the salinity, temperature and density distributions over the Gulf of Thailand. The significant factors to perform the model are initial condition, boundary condition and dispersion coefficients. The initial condition is applied for saving computational time because of the dispersion process is slow process compare with the large area such as the Gulf of Thailand. The boundary condition is performed to control the water quality near the shoreline and the open sea. The vertical distributions of salinity, temperature and density are assigned tlu·ough this 3-D model. The last factors, which are dispersion coefficients, are represented the dispersion characteristic in this area. The results are calibrated with the observed data over the dry period (March-April 1982-1993). At the first 3 layers the computed salinity, temperature and density are conformed to the general pattern of observed data especially to the boundary conditions. There are some different for the deepest layer due to the other unknowns factor influence to the flow.
