AbstractRainfall-runoff models often require long time series data for calibrating them. Unfortunately, there are either no or only very short periods of observed data available in river basins in many parts of the world. Recent studies have suggested that in hydrological modeling various input data and model parameters could be acquired or estimated by the use of GIS data. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the parameters of rainfall-runoff models and basin characteristics, and to propose suitable approach for estimation of these parameters from GIS data. The data from five river basins, two basins in Vietnam and three basins in Thailand were used in the study. The parameters of two models, the Tank model and the Storage Function model, were first obtained by calibrating the models for each basin using observed rainfall and hydrograph. Basin characteristics such as topography, vegetation, and soil properties were prepared. Vegetation data was made from NVDI (Normalized Differential Vegetation Index) which was calculated from NOAA satellite data received at AIT. The physical implication of model parameters was examined to find out the basin characteristics, which have the major effect on each parameter. Finally, the relationship was obtained for each parameter and its corresponding basin characteristic. ยท The result showed that many Tank model parameters had the linear correlation with the corresponding basin characteristic, especially parameters of the first tank having the good correlation with topography and soil condition. This correlation can allow the estimation of parameters of the Tank and the Storage Function models directly from basin characteristics.
