AbstractThe depletion of forest and deterioration of other natural resources associated with the consequences of increasing population growth has been a serious issue for sustainable land use management system. Agroforestry has been recognized as an appropriate land use system to improve human welfare while protecting and conserving the natural resources. Therefore, understanding of the potential and constraints for the promotion of agroforestry is significant importance needed for the better utilization of scarce resources. This study focusing on the practices of crops, trees and livestock integrated as a system in the farmland; assessment the possibility of incorporating preference trees in agricultural farmland. Moreover, identification the possibility income generating improvement options tlu·ough agroforestry practices by using primary and secondary data collection to compare the land use and economic of agroforestry among tlu·ee farm size categories. The existing tree species in the study area was used as a framework for establishing farmer's preference trees that can be incorporated in the farmland to improve agroforestry practices. The important uses of tree growing are (in order of decreasing importance): fruit, firewood, fence, timber, soil fertility improvement, fodder and shade. The study found that small farmers, who implemented intensive agroforestry practices, are receiving relatively more benefits than large farmers, who adapted extensive agroforestry practices. An important concern is that agriculture productivity is still low due to climate uncertainty, poor soil fertility, insects and disease outbreak on crops and livestock, and improper land use management associated with population growth, these factors are the main constraints for the promotion agroforestry practices. Analysis of constraints led to a design an outline of a suitable agroforestry system for the farmers in the study area. Recommendations stemming from this research including strengthen the agricultural extension services and facilities; improve farmer capacity for a specific skill; rehabilitation of irrigation systems; improvement of credit programs; and enhancement of intensive agroforestry practices, which can be supported by appropriate agricultural inputs and facilities tlu·ough government policy and other development agencies.
