AbstractThis study was conducted to provide additional information on soil fertility dynamics through years of cultivation in a Philippine upland agroforestry system via farm survey, soil analysis and computer modeling. Results of soil analysis and modeling supported farmers' perceptions about soil fertility degradation and consequent maize yield decline in Claveria. Without external input applications, nutrient levels cannot be maintained and the system sustained if the bulk of the biomass is removed. Soil test kit can be used as a reliable indicator of N, P and K. SCUAF reasonably predicted changes in soil C and N in the actual setting although further calibrations on P are needed to establish a more solidly founded and satisfactory model for simulating this nutrient in a given set of environmental conditions. There is a pressing need to identify other management options for farmers to restore soil fertility and improve crop yield. Information about underlying physical and chemical properties' dynamics and soil fertility-influencing factors provided in this study could be used as basis for further research and rehabilitation of degraded agro-ecosystem in the municipality. A fertilizer recommendation for maize was formulated based on BARC (1997) Guide but this needs further verification in relation to crop response and economic variables.
