AbstractIn the analysis of cracking localization, the consideration of stability and bifurcation of equilibrium states is one of the tasks that have to be done. To investigate the stability and bifurcation of equilibrium states, the stationary condition of the energy of the system with respect to irreversible variables must be examined. It is more suitable to have an energy expression written in terms of discrete irreversible variables. This implies that the discrete crack approach should be more appropriate for this kind of analysis than smeared crack approach. However, the discrete crack approach may not be suitable for problem concerning many cracks, which are unavoidable in the analysis of cracking localization. Therefore, a special treatment on the smeared crack approach is developed to avoid the drawbacks of both approaches. A discrete irreversible variable related to crack strain is introduced. This allows the consideration of stability and bifurcation of the equilibrium by considering the variations of the energy with respect to the proposed discrete variable. The proposed method is implemented into a finite element program. Then, it is used to solve simple cracking localization problems in order to verify the validity of the method in predicting the crack patterns and localization. From the test problems, good results can be observed.
