Abstract | The first buy car policy was an incentive or rather subsidy that was initiated by the previous government of Yingluck Shinawatt with the intention of uplifting the living standard of close to half a million people, expanding the tax net in the form of corporate tax, excise duty and vat and to kick start an ailing economy. This subsidy cost the Thai government around 90.13 billion Baht and was availed by a little over 1.23 million people. This research study was done based on the SWOT-AHP analysis to identify the Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat of the first car subsidy policy in Thailand on the stakeholders’ perspective and suggest the measures to improve the policy if re-implemented in the future. The stakeholders suggest that program was successful with the figures supporting the claim of the government. In the opinion of the stakeholders there were many positive points that came out of this program such as the increase in economic activity of the nation. The manufacturing sector, specially those associated with the automobile industry, showed strong growth, which was reflected on the national growth. This study along with the recommendations and conclusion could serve the government in good stead were it to implement another such scheme in the future. The negative impacts it had could be addressed to and mitigated and several new policies could be implemented to get the maximum benefit for both the government and the consumer. |
