AbstractInfrastructure capital performs as a backbone of country's economy and provides bases for other sectors to perform in order to achieve higher level of overall economic growth. Inadequate infrastructure causes increased cost, low level of productivity, ineffective linkages between production and market; and low profit margins which in turn accumulate to affect industrial development and reduce economic growth of the region. This research aims to study the spatial and temporal variation of infrastructure as well as industrial development in Pakistan over the period of 2003 to 2013. Later on, overall district development trend has been studied showing the variation of district development in the said period. Further, relationship between infrastructure and industrial development has been found by using statistical techniques. Research is based on secondary data which has been collected from various governmental agencies in the form of annual development reports, provincial and district development statistics and industrial census reports etc. Three provinces have been taken under study namely Punjab, Sindh and KPK. District is taken as unit of analysis and following that all the district level secondary data has been collected. For analysis, data has been normalized by using 0 – 1 transformation technique and then districts have been classified in four categories of development level based on the relative composite index. This classification has been mapped by using ArcGIS separately for infrastructure, industrial development and overall development for three time periods. Bivariate analysis has been applied to find out the relationship between district infrastructure and industrial development in Pakistan. Study finds that infrastructure and industrial development have not evenly distributed among the districts of Pakistan. Central Punjab is the most developed region in Pakistan while KPK is the least developed among the three province understudy. Development disparity exists among province as well as within the provinces which shows few central districts are target of resource allocation and focus of development while rest are still marginalized in terms of infrastructure and hence industrial development. Bivariate analysis shows that there exists a significant relationship between district infrastructure and industrial development and impact of infrastructure on industrial development is substantial.
