AbstractFor the enhancement of agricultural productivity, irrigation plays vital role. Irrigation system being the common source of irrigation should be maintained properly. For the maintenance of the irrigation, farmers’ participation is crucial. This thesis included factors affecting collective action and decision making to study their impact in performance of irrigation. In this research, system level information was collected from 12 irrigation systems in three districts and household information was obtained from 160 irrigation users. Sampled irrigation system had same mode of governance, was in similar ecological regions and canal irrigation system. Out of 12 sampled systems, only four irrigation systems showed high performance level. Highly performed irrigation referred to adequate availability of water, good maintenance of system and conformance of existing rules. Lower level of trust and reciprocity was found in Jyamire irrigation system among highly performed irrigation systems, which showed the major reason for lower yield. Among three study districts, Chitwan had higher availability of water and higher yield. The reason for this was due to strict following of the prevailing rules by the users. This showed that performance of the irrigation system is affected by the factors related to decision making and collective action.
