Abstract | The Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-Advanced) system targets to achieve high data rate that necessitates the requirement of high spectral efficiency. However, the typical reuse of frequency is not sufficient enough to meet the requirement because of the bandwidth scarcity. Since the LTE-Advanced system is expected to be deployed in a two tier cell architecture where femtocells will be deployed as the second tier, a novel resource scheduling algorithm is proposed to demonstrate explicitly of how the spectral efficiency requirement of LTE-Advanced systems can be met. The resource scheduling algorithm is based on a novel resource reuse strategy that employs the reuse of resources among femtocells in the femto tier. We develop the resource scheduling algorithm on top of the Proportional Fair (PF) scheduling principle where the novel resource reuse strategy is employed. Hence, it is called the Modified PF (MPF) scheduling algorithm. Moreover, an explicit interference coordination strategy is developed to reuse the co-channel resources, and a new mechanism is investigated to improve the system fairness performances. A system level simulation is carried out to evaluate the performances of the proposed scheduling algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed resource scheduling algorithm can meet the LTE-Advanced system's spectral efficiency requirements. |
