AbstractIndustry plays an important role in a developing country like Thailand consuming significant quantities of energy. The present study was aimed at studying the energy conservation measures implemented and the factors influencing their non-implementation, especially in food and beverages sector that consumes a large share of energy among the manufacturing sectors (33 % in 1997). The energy conservation achievements in Thailand including the Energy Conservation and Promotion Act BE 2535 and its implementation were reviewed. The energy audit done during the past decade were considered based on the survey reports of 355 factories. The nature and type of measures proposed, the investment required, pay back period, the savings estimated and those actually realized were studied. It was observed that the factories are aware of ECP Act, training courses, etc. The results of the analysis indicates that non technical measures, such as, knowledge and expertise, investment, etc. are important barriers for the implementation. Simple method for the factory owner themselves to observe and monitor their energy consumption trend with possibilities for energy conservation would be beneficial. The current energy audit procedure and the importance of non technical factor on energy use in agro food industries was then analyzed by participating in the energy audit in two industries and by mean of a questionnaire survey. Technical factors for improving energy efficiency and measures have been recommended in the audited agro food industries. However, it was observed that non-technical factors are usually not considered and could help in implementing the measures. Energy consumption is not considered as a major concern for the factories. A software that would be useful for fact01y managers to assess the energy use pattern to look for opportunities of energy conservation and to create awareness on energy use has been developed. This was demonstrated in a factory and energy conservation specialists for feedback and suggestions. It was observed that such a software or a method for observing and analyzing energy use will be useful for factory management.
