Abstract | This study was aimed at understanding the status of energy use in Thai dairy industry and the energy conservation potential in a dairy plant-producing milk powder and pasteurized milk. This was done by mean of a survey of nine factories, which indicated that the average specific fuel and electrical energy consumption of Thai market milk manufacturers was 1.3 GJ per ton and 264.71 kWh per ton (0.953 GJ per ton), respectively. These were higher as compared to other countries. Regarding implementation of energy conservation in the Thai dairy industry it was observed that though some measures were done in large-scale factories, while only very few were implemented in small- and medium-scale factories. The study also evaluated the energy conservation potential in the milk powder plant and the pasteurized milk plant in the Royal Chitralada Projects. Energy audits were conducted at these two plants, which indicated that the specific fuel consumption and specific electricity consumption was 20.63 GJ per ton and 5,448.6 kWh per ton (19.62 GJ/ton) for the milk powder plant, while the specific electricity consumption in the pasteurized milk plant was between 38.15 to 43.23 kWh per ton (0.14-0.156 GJ/ton). In the milk powder plant, it was found that there were opportunities to reduce fuel and electricity consumption nearly by 65% and 26.2%, respectively, while steam consumption could be saved by modifying the existing cleaning procedure. In the pasteurized milk plant, it was noted that improving the cleaning method could save approximate 31 % of electrical energy. The energy conservation potential after audit was presented to the plant manager, who observed that the cleaning modification, condensate recovery, increase additional effect evaporator, and heat recovery from the combustion gases could be implemented in the milk powder plant, while heat recovery from the condensing unit of ice bank, cleaning modification, and partial homogenization could be implemented in the pasteurized milk plant. The study of the energy conservation possibilities and potentials in the milk plant in Royal Chitralada Projects may be a reference for other dairy factories for implementation in Thailand. |
