AbstractThis study presents stress paths and strain paths at various zones in braced excavation. Plaxis program was used for the analysis. For modeling soft clay and stiff clay, a Cam-Clay type Soft Soil Model is adopted. The sand layer underlying the first stiff clay layer is modeled by Hard Soil Model. The undrained analysis incorporated with ground water calculation was carried out for plane strain condition. Sensitive input parameters such as modified swelling index and modified compression index are determined by performing back analysis and other input parameters are selected from the previous study on Bangkok sub-soils. The instrumentation data of Green Tower project in Bangkok, was used for numerical calibration. Results are obtained from active and passive zones of excavation both in soft clay and stiff clay. It is found that the passive state is not fully mobilized in the analysis. Stress paths resulted from numerical simulation agree with those presented by Lamb (1970). Strain paths are used to identify the undrained behaviour for plane strain condition. In addition, effective stress plots, active pore pressure plots and displacement of elements which usedĀ·for determining strain paths are also reported. The study is furthur extended to investigate the stiffuess of retaining structure. The stress history of sub-soil is also considered in the analysis. Finally, the plots of stress ratio versus shear strain are obtained and the shear strain plots are superimposed with stress plots. Interpretations are also given for those plots.
