Abstract | This study examines the problems and potentiality of rural industrial development in Kaski, Nepal. Current problems and future prospects are assessed based on a literature review and field survey of the author during his visit in this area in 1997. The physical infrastructure, functional activities and availability of raw materials are crucial factors for the promotion of cottage industries. The utmost occupation of the community is agriculture, which is deteriorating day by day. There is ever increasing trend of out migration from the village to the regional city, Pokhara. The investors eventually hesitate to invest in local areas with apprehension of not getting sufficient raw materials, skilled labourers and consumers to sell production. So the tendency has been paramount to establish industries near by the market centre. The study shows that the majority of rural population in Kaski district has not yet received the full benefits of advanced technology and modern innovation and this is due to poorly developed physical infrastructure. Physical infrastructure like telephone, drinking water, electricity and transportation are crucial factors for industrial establishment and promotion. Existing infrastructure in the district reveals that six VDCs have high potential for rural industrial development. The study shows that hill farming is considered least attractive and less remunerative due to several biophysical, socioeconomic, institutional and policy related constraints. Rural and cottage industries are important to uplift the quality of their lives. Government has launched training and programmes towards the protection and promotion of rural industries. But those programmes do not benefit rural people effectively. It would be effective if it takes place with careful planning, taking all factors into consideration and devising a prepared strategy towards a common goal. The progress, development and growth of villages cannot be directed by remote officials from their desks. The study recommended that rural areas should be linked with road networks. Moreover they will have to learn to promote their own growth, using their own resources, both human and technical, to plan and innovate for themselves. |
