Abstract | The sheer volume of the available number of journals, research reports, conference papers and other forms of information reported in any field, leaves the information seeker confused as to where to get relevant information from. The problem is more evident for all users of the Internet. The classic method has been to provide summarized information to help the user make a judgment on the relevance of the document. However, the sheer size of information in the present context makes it impossible for information agencies and libraries to hire such a large number of expert abstractors to do the job. Also the experts require time to make summaries and this might mean days, depending on the sheer size of the information source. However the rapidity of information change no longer makes it possible for the information seeker to wait that long. The focus in the field of summarization has therefore been forced to shift its outlook towards faster, cheaper and more convenient means. This in other words le:ids to automatic summarizing of text. A review of studies in automatic abstracting would thus allow a better understanding of the pros and cons, difficulties and possibilities in this area. This would finally help in constructing a simple model of an automatic abstracting tool, perhaps a tool that summarizes by extracting text from the original. |
