| Abstract | Metadata is structured data about data, such as bibliographic records about books or Web pages. "Resource description communities" with different descriptive schemas and usage conventions have arisen in various scientific disciplines, institutional settings, and language areas. Since 1995, the Dublin Core Element Set has emerged as a Web standard from an ongoing effort to achieve international consensus on the semantics of a simple and broad superset of descriptors that cross-cut this di versity of schemas. This thesis considers the semantics of Dublin Core as expressed in the language Bahasa Indonesia. On the initiative of the thesis author, seven experts from Indonesian research libraries and standards committees met in June I 998 to agree on the translation of DC-Indonesian, and the thesis discusses cultural subtleties of the alternative translations considered there. The thesis also introduces INDOMARC, the established library format for monographs in Indonesia; proposes a "crosswalk" specifying the semantic relationship between the categories of Dublin Core and INDOMARC; and points out areas where differences in scope and granularity between the standards can lead to a loss of precision when records are converted. |
