Abstract | A business process is an excellent example of a complex system. In any business process redesign project, business process models are needed to facilitate communications among project teams and to help discover opportunities for improving processes. Nevertheless, traditional modeling languages cannot support the description of all business process requirements nor the evaluation of a business process performance. Consequently, new modeling languages are needed. In this study, a new modeling language is proposed based on the standard Unified Modeling Language (UML). It is called Extended Unified Modeling Language (E-UML). The E-UML integrates Object-Oriented concepts with the modeling of a business process. This can help model a business process more naturally and effectively, and can emphasize both the data modeling and process modeling. Moreover, the E-UML can model a business process with sufficient information for teams to use in redesigning a process and in evaluating the performance of a process. In order to demonstrate its effectiveness, the E-UML is applied to a real-world case study, compared with the Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing Definition (IDEF) by the means of empirical evaluations, and also compared with other widely used modeling languages using twelve main criteria. |
