AbstractThis study is motivated by the fact that the practice of subcontracting has been becoming very common in construction industry, especially in EPe pipeline projects performed in Vietnam. Subcontractor cost, therefore, takes place as a significant part in total cost of the project. Although project cost is considerably affected by subcontractor's claim, the Vietnam construction industry seems unaware of the benefits of managing subcontractor's claims in such an effective and efficient manner. Therefore, the study explores claiming process in construction projects in order to answer the questions: why, when and how a claim occurs? The study has also found that these claims can be considered as risks and can be effectively and efficiently managed by applying the DNV's managing risk model. In order to develop a strategy for managing subcontractor's claim in an EPe pipeline project, a real EPe pipeline project was investigated through gathering of correspondences, claim documentation and interview of project members. The result shows that there were some types of claim that could be avoided if a strategy for managing these claims had been established and implemented by the main contractor. Other claims could also, in terms of loss, be controlled and minimized if early recognized. From findings and investigated facts, a framework has been proposed to help main contractor manage subcontractor's claims and so far manage the project cost effectively
