AbstractThe utilization of ICT as a teaching–learning tool continues to be very popular in Thai primary schools. However, technology impact assessments are not always properly carried out in such schools, and the benefits of using ICT in primary education are not always clear. This research aimed is to assess whether the use of ICT has an impact on student performance compared to circumstances where such technology is not used. The experiment was designed to collect data from 2 different learning circumstances; ICT-assisted teaching-learning and traditional teaching-learning. This research also examined the overlapping concepts of technology acceptance and user satisfaction in ICT adoption success. The model examining the relationships between the students’ perceptions of a specific e-learning application and their educational outcomes was put to test. In the results from the analysis of data from two experimental units, the researcher found no significant effects of the use of ICT on student performance either in classroom behaviors or in improvement scores. On further inspection of influential factors for the adoption of ICT, the results show that only subjective norm has a significant effect on the students’ classroom behaviors. In contrast to the previous literature and conventional beliefs, the researcher found that ICT is not always an effective teaching–learning tool regardless of the educational level of students. Additionally, contrary to the general expectations, this research finds no evidence to confirm that the student performance can be improved through user satisfaction. However, perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment are the two variables that enhance the student performance significantly. The newfound evidence sheds light on an unexpected variable – visual impression, which specifically hinders the students’ classroom behaviors. The findings also show that the only variable that affects the students’ overall satisfaction is perceived educational value. The unexpected findings obtained from this particular experimental research prompted a re-thinking of the conventional belief that using ICT will elevate student educational performance.
