AbstractThis paper is to address the potential of privatizing the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGA T), a state-owned enterprise in Thailand, to cope with the changing environment and the global trend toward privatization in power supply industry. Privatization is no longer a social option; it is an economic imperative. Privatization provides significant benefits to individual shareholders and consumers as it becomes more consumer responsive. Moreover, privatization has shown to benefit the economy and the country in general. This paper is to analyze the privatization program of EGAT which aims at partial private ownership by allowing the private sector to participate in the provision and management of power supply. Background information of electricity and power supply industry, its characteristics and operating environment, global and regional outlook are explored. Environmental scanning including current energy and electricity situation in Thailand is also studied to reflect the feasibility of privatization program. This paper also deals with private power participation plan and process, obstacles and difficulties confronting EGAT. Privatization process and steps are discovered and analyzed accordingly. Concerning the EGAT's privatization, political will and support from the government body, cooperation between public and private sectors must be encouraged. EGAT's plan on privatization must relate with government policies and social as well as economic factors while ensuring that all stakeholders' interest is taken into account.
