AbstractA novel hybrid optical-electronic code-division multiple-access network is proposed based on the Kronecker product of two sequences of relatively high weight and relatively short length to form Kronecker sequences with useful correlation properties. A model for the system is developed and the analytical expressions for the signals at the output of the correlator receiver are established. A general equation for the bit error rate performance is also formulated. The use of Gold sequences and Lempe! sequences for generating four types of Kronecker sequences is investigated and it is shown that by carefully selecting the component sequences it is possible to identify large sets of Kronecker sequences which have good crosscorrelation properties. The performance of the hybrid system using such Kronecker sequences is analytically evaluated and validated through simulation. The performance of the hybrid system is also compared to that of noncoherent all-optical code-division multiple-access systems using prime codes, truncated Costas codes and random balanced binary codes. We find that, besides being implementable the hybrid system also offers better performance and permits a large number of simultaneous users.
