Abstract | There are numerous studies on the relationship between R&D spending and profitability of the firm. However, the results are mixed and vary from one industry to another. While some studies show a strong relationship between R&D expenditure and profits, others show a weak one. This study investigates the relationship between R&D expenditure and profitability of the firm in solar PV industry. Solar energy is another example of high-tech and comparatively new industry where R&D spending is in millions of dollars. R&D spending’s take the shape of scientific research aimed at increasing the photovoltaics efficiency rate on the one hand and reducing the production cost through use of innovative and low cost materials on the other hand. Firms tend to spend on R&D to become more competitive technologically as well as to attract customer with latest products. This research study will focus on top solar PV firms based on their respective revenue (as of 2015). It will help us to understand the R&D efficiency of the solar PV industry and how much of these expenditures were translated into profits by those companies. This study will particularly help private firms, government policy makers and investors about the future profitability potential of the solar PV industry on the basis of R&D effort put forward by the solar PV firms. |
