AbstractSustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is considered to be of great importance with regard to interaction sustainability in supply chain management. Previous studies examined proactive firms that were early adopters in the implementation of SSCM practices based on their organizational capabilities. However, many firms have still been not able to adopt the appropriate hierarchy due to a lack of resources and capabilities. Stakeholders’ incentives are one of the significant triggers for supporting the implementation of sustainability practices. Firms’ capabilities and the importance of incentives toward enhancing sustainability practices and performance still need further investigation particularly in laggard firms or recent adopters. This study aims to define the aspects of SSCM capabilities and to investigate their impacts on sustainability performance as well as the moderating role of supply chain and government incentives in the context of Thai food manufacturing companies. A qualitative research method was initially applied as a preliminary study by conducting in-depth interviews. The qualitative findings provide the empirical evidence for developing the research instruments and supporting the discussion of the research results. A quantitative approach is the main research method of the study. A factor analysis and a hierarchical linear regression analysis were applied to mail survey data collected from 215 Thai food manufacturing companies by using a questionnaire. The statistical results provide significant findings that three aspects of SSCM capabilities including internal participation, sustainable supply chain collaboration, and sustainable production, have positive effects on the aspects of sustainability performance and incentives can strengthen the relationship between the SSCM capabilities and social performance. These findings contribute to the literature on SSCM and also lead to practical suggestions as to how SSCM capabilities and incentives should be encouraged to improve sustainability performance; in addition, environmental performance should also be taken into account for its importance and potential for improvements.
