Abstract | Great changes have taken place in the Chinese power sector in the recent decades, and more changes and racial transformation will happen in the near future. The liberation of the Chinese power sector is benefiting the keep growing national economy,, at the same time, the accelerated growth of national economy generates the huge energy demands market in China, and therefore creates tremendous opportunities for the investment in the sector. Joint ventures, the most popular investment strategy, are also widely used in developing power projects in China. The jointly invested project between GMS Public Ltd. (Thailand) and Yunnan Provincial Electric Power Corporation (China), Yunnan Jinhong Hydropower Project is discussed in the study. Three aspects of the project are covered by this study. Firstly, the joint venture entry strategy is analysed in details based on the Chinese power sector background, industry competitive analysis and the business environmental scan and SWOT analysis in Yunnan, China. The possible organisational changes to improve the implementation of the project into a successful operating business unit have been made. Secondly, the financing strategy of the project is introduced and discussed in the context of power project financing in China. Thirdly, the risks which the project is confronting are identified and analysed, the mitigation measures and risk management framework are developed. At last, the conclusions have been drawn, and recommendations for the better improvement of developing power projects in China have been given. In the Appendix, some latest and very useful information about getting the approval of power project in China is given for reference. |
