AbstractThis research study attempts to find out writing instrument segments and to analyse current and future writing instrument markets in Myanmar. The study focuses on pencils, ballpens, erasers, highlighters and whiteboard markers which represents writing instruments in generally and are widely used. The survey was conducted in Yangon and Mandalay with government officials, government buyers, organizational buyers, retailers of writing instruments and individual endusers. The results reveal that all writing instruments are imported through normal trade and border trade. The imp01i tax for writing instruments are 3 percent and they are imp01ied mainly from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan. The wholesale markets are located in Mingalar market, 31st street (middle block), Theingyi bazaar and some importers' showrooms and sale centers in their specific places. The writing instruments are sold in every markets, minimarkets, supermarkets, general stores and betel shops. The largest customers are students and staff from both private and public organizations. Stationery, Printing and Photographic Stores Trading (SPPS) 1s responsible to sell writing instruments for students under the Ministry of Education. Based on the findings of the research study, some recommendations are proposed to writing instruments producers regarding marketing mix and entering markets into Myanmar.
