AbstractThis paper recognises the challenges faced by the Sri Lankan organisations in light of the global trend towards free economy. It argues that the organisations should make use of the opportunities made available by the rapid advancement of information technology to enhance the competitiveness. Most of the enterprises which made an attempt towards this have not realised the expected benefits of implementing IS. Main reason for this begin the lack of understanding of the factors which influence the successfulness of IS implementation. Hence main objective of the research is to identifj; the factors which have positive influence on IS implementation success. The study involved two detailed case analysis of recently implemented IS projects. Two projects are assessed using a model based on the assumption that IS is basically providing service to customer, who are the internal and external users of the system. The implementation processes of the cases were investigated using personal recollections of the people who involved in implementation. By integrating assessment of IS and investigation of implementation processes several success factors were extracted. Based on the findings recommendations are made to successfully implement and maintain an IS in business organisation.
