Abstract | Genetic Algorithm is the one of optimization technique that works best in design problems with discrete variables. ·It employs the survival of the fitness philosophy in determining the optimum combination. In this study, 3D steel buildings based on rigid floor diaphragm are optimized by genetic algorithm for minimum weight design over the list of standard WF steel sections. To achieve this study, the author extends the existing program developed by Torregosa (1998) to optimize 2D steel frames. The different search procedures are tested in this study. Different crossover types, crossover probability and population size are used to find the best method. Elitist with mutation search method, 1-point and 2-point crossover type are proven to be the best. Higher population size yields the better results than the lower ones. In order to examine the performance of genetic algorithms, results from the case studies are compared with those from the other optimization methods. From the comparison of the results, genetic algorithm shows the higher performance over the other methods in a small size of variable problems. |
