AbstractVery Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) networks have been successfully providing communication within the corporate environment but due to the complex user demands, the need of multimedia traffic, multiple access protocol, data integrity and security have increased. This research study investigates the existing and the future VSAT applications in a corporate Intranet. The Query/response and the Bulk data type of applications are considered as they are the dominant types of application in a corporate Intranet. The response time for the Query/Response and Bulk data type of application are calculated and compared under the Pure ALOHA and Slotted ALOHA protocol. The interworking of the LANs within a VSAT network is also studied regarding the communication architectures, protocols and interfaces. The Oracle client/server application of Unocal, Thailand is considered between Bangkok and Funan (Remote site) for the investigation of the high response time. As per the investigation, the recommendations suggested to avoid the high response time include the use of two-tier client/server architecture, avoid the mixing of 16-bit and 32-bit applications in the client side and to use a distributed database architecture instead of a centralized database architecture. The recommendations suggested for the overall VSAT network includes the placement of a backup transceiver at the Bangkok node to improve its reliability and also the installation of an auto-tracking antenna on the unstable drilling rig to maintain the continuity of the VSAT to satellite link.
