Abstract | The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is currently being developed within Europe as a third generation system for mobile communications. It will complement and, in many cases, provide integration with the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) which is currently in service within Europe and increasingly globally. The resultant UMTS system will provide network and service infrastructure convergence for fixed and mobile networks by allowing network operators to flexibly and efficiently offer service to customers irrespective of their access means. This does not imply that fixed and mobile networks will not exist in their own right when UMTS is introduced, but rather UMTS will supplement existing systems such as GSM, DCS 1800 and DECT. This research study provides a comprehensive overview of the proposals submitted to ETSI pertaining to the standardization of various aspects of the UMTS system. The main characteristics, innovations and trends concerning network architectures, types of services and radio interface are presented. More emphasis is laid on explaining both the key aspects of WCDMA technology, as the standard air interface for UMTS, and the primary benefits the technology offers to wireless communication system operators and their subscribers. Emphasis is also given to other aspects of the UMTS standard namely: Network-User Security, its operating environments and the telecommunication services that the UMTS system promised to support. |
