AbstractMultiuser detection allows for the efficient use of bandwidth in code division multiple access (CDMA) channels through mitigation of near-far effects and multiple access interference (MAI). However there are several obstacles preventing the use of multiuser detection techniques in practical CDMA, among them, the major obstacle is the receiver complexity. Several multiuser detector schemes have been proposed in the literature in an attempt to give the most suitable detector for use in practical CDMA system. In this study, the multiuser detection techniques have been reviewed. Then by applying the optimum multiuser detection technique, the performance of the coded CDMA system has been evaluated in term of bit error rate under AWGN and Rayleigh flat fading channel. The receiver model is a joint multiuser detector and channel decoder scheme, working in an iterative manner. The performance of the multiuser detector has been improved by the use of forward error correction codes. The newly proposed soft in soft out maximum a posteriori algorithm has been adapted to use for multiuser detector. Finally the effect of trellis termination for multiple access channel trellis are also investigated.
