Abstract"Internet Telephony" is a new Internet feature where, real-time voice communication occurs over a packet network using Internet protocol. It has started being used in the developed countries for its lucrative long distance call charge. Internet Service Providers (ISP) in Bangladesh are also looking for a reliable Internet Telephony (IT) network based on their existing Internet architecture. Therefore, in this research study a basic IT network architecture is proposed based on the existing Internet platform for the ISPs in Bangladesh. Link capacity required of an IT network in Bangladesh is determined for - 100% Web browsing, ( 60% Web browsing + 40% IT) and 100% Web browsing and Internet Telephony capability cases with different voice data rates. Voice packet delays in IP and VSAT networks are also calculated in different coding standards like GSM 6.10, G.729 and G.723.1. From this study, it is understood that the required link capacity for an IT network is directly proportional to the total number of Internet subscribers, busy hour service seeking probability, average holding time, blocking probability and voice data rate. Also, the quality of a voice signal degrades more for higher voice compression rate.
