AbstractThis research study presents a concatenated coding scheme using the two most commonly used error correction codes: Reed Solomon (RS) and Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM). This scheme is very attractive for digital mobile communications, where the effect of fading especially multi-path needs to be reduced and the bandwidth usage needs to be optimized. Keeping in perspective the inherent characteristics of mobile channel a thorough analysis of this system model is done over fully interleaved frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. The use of channel coding together with an equalizer to combat multi-path fading ISI is presented in this study. The performance evaluation done during the course of this research study shows comparative results for A WGN, flat fading and frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels. The simulation results show that the required Bit Error Rate (BER) of the order10ยท3 for reliable transmission can be achieved at nearly 12 dB signal to noise ratio (SNR) in the case of RS_ TCM over fully interleaved Rayleigh fading channels, which is comparable to any other concatenated code used under similar channel condition.
