AbstractThe primary advantage of TCM/MTCM is its ability to achieve increased power efficiency without the expansion of bandwidth introduced by the coding process. Thus any channel that is both power-limited and bandwidth-limited would be suited to TCMIMTCM. This research presents the error performance of MTCM schemes when applied to frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel. Three powerful soft-output equalizer algorithms are described, Soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOY A), suboptimum Soft-output algorithm (SSA), and Max-Log-MAP algorithm. The Viterbi algorithm (VA) is considered for the propose of comparison. The error performance of MTCM schemes with soft-output equalizer is evaluated in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER). Perfect knowledge of the channel coefficients are assumed in the simulation works. The comparisons of performance between different types of equalizers and between different schemes of MTCM are made. The simulation results are given for frequency-selective fading channel. The results show that significant coding gain can be achieved by a suitably designed MTCM in fading channels in comparison with uncoded QPSK. The MTCM schemes in this research do not give a better performance than the conventional TCM scheme.
