AbstractIn a manufacturing system, whenever there is a need for redesign or improvement it, one certainly would like to know in advance, the behaviour of the new system. Without interrupting the real system, simulation appears to be the effective tool to investigate and evaluate the alternatives. This study deals with a real problem of a workshop, which manufactures medium voltage cables. The goal is to improve the performance of the manufacturing system. The study consists of two paiis. The first part is the rearrangement of facility layout of the workshop with the support of FACTORY Package. The aim of this part is to minimize the total distance travelled and the costs of materials handling. The second part is to use simulation with Simple++ for modeling the system with some proposed layouts from first paii. The analysis is then made to investigate existing system and several other alternatives (taking some replacements of machines) to obtain the alternative that has the best performance.
