AbstractA preference for cable-stayed bridges was manifested on the interests of the aesthetic view, the economical aspect, and the facile fabrication. However the intricate configurations and the specific characteristics of cable-stayed bridges led to the efforts of decisive analysis. This study endeavors to diminish that drawback at stage of preliminary design, leading to the development of the recent package for cable-stayed bridge analysis. For the application in Microsoft WINDOWS 95 environment, both preprocessor module and postprocessor module are accomplished with the graphical user interface (GUI) by 32-bit version of Visual Basic 4.0. Besides the extended version of finite element analysis program (XFEAP), which performs as the main processor, is recompiled by 32-bit PowerStation FORTRAN. Regarding the solution, the finite element technique is applied with four types of elements employed to model cable-stayed bridges. They are the degenerated six-node thin walled element (Kanok-Nukulchai and Sivakumar, 1988), the quadratic three-node cable element (Prugmahachaikul, 1982), the space frame element, and the space truss element, which model the bridge decks, the cables, the pylons, and the saddles respectively. Finally the reliability of the developed package is verified by several problems of cable-stayed bridges.
