Abstract | Materials management for industrial project is a complex process. The function is encompass materials takeoff, preparation of requisition and vendor selection, purchasing order, expediting and economical transportation of materials, site receiving, inspection and issuing, and materials surplus disposal. In Taiwan industrial project, materials management practice is mostly depend on the management aspects. Although the research on materials management is used integrated computer system, but the implementation is still rare. This study identifies the current practices of materials management in Taiwan construction industry. Problems related to materials management were identified using two analysis, qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. Problem event analysis is to find out the ranking of problem event on the current practices. Highest ranking of problem events are too few people to handle materials, engineering and scope changes, purchasing the same items several times, loss of materials identification control and excessive delays due to constant design changes, unrealistic "need" dates, inadequate storage or failure to plan storage, failure to ensure that materials arrive at the site when needed, excessive quality control requirements, loss of time and money due to excessive restrictions, late ordering of materials, excessive use of factors in the purchase order to compensate for uncertainties in the design, and use of factors in purchased order by project manager to compensate for recognized problems in the takeoff. The results were compared with the results from materials flow analysis. Conclusion of this result were used for suggest improvement. Model of materials management was developed by formulating procedure with improvement toward the main problem of materials management. The model is organized into material takeoff process, purchasing and expediting process, and site receiving and issuing process. |
