AbstractThe Bang Pa-In Precast Yard was entrusted with the task of producing 24,000 concrete segments for the Second-State Expressway System of Bangkok. Each segment involves the completion of a large number of activities by several worker groups. Due to this queuing of activities is a common occurrence on the yard. This study presents the application of the queuing theory to analyze the segmentmanufacturing process at the Bang Pa-In Precast Yard. It was shown that the arrival rate of activities follows the Poisson probability distribution function and the service time of each activity follows exponential probability distribution. The M/Ml l queuing model with infinite source was employed to estimate performance of segment precasting operation. It was shown that the expected waiting time in queue and expected waiting time in system obtained from the queuing model are close to the values observed from the yard. Sensitivity analyses of waiting times and production cycle times were conducted for improving the existing operations.
