Abstract | Cosmetic is one of the fastest growing industries in China. With some urban consumers spending up to 20% of their monthly salaries on personal care, multi-national companies are engaged in an intense battle to grab a share of an expanding market. The total production of China's cosmetic industry has consistently increased 21 % to 35% annually over the last three years, with its 1995 production value topping Rmbl.9 billion (US$232 million). The industry itself has almost doubled in size over the last three years, with a great deal of its strength supplied through foreign investment. Distribution systems are evolving from central planning which was in place for half a century. A free market system is emerging. Foreign investment is high, fueling the growth of the Chinese cosmetic industry, and consumers have money to spend. Critical analysis of the factors influencing the sales volume of cosmetics in the Chinese market and distribution channel is the focus of this study. Finally, a summary of major findings from this study and recommendations to companies contemplating entry or expansion their operations in China is provided. |
