AbstractThe purpose of this research study is mainly to analyze the opportunities and challenges in the pulp and paper industry in Thailand. The study provides an overview of the pulp and paper industry. At the same time, it assesses the effects of current economic situation in the industry. On the basis of the analysis of the external environment and the industrial structure, the character of the pulp and paper industry was drawn. It is a capital-intensive, complicated and high technology industry, with high switching cost, also low competition in upstream industry and low consumption rate per capita. All these characteristics of the industry provide some opportunities to the existing producers or new entrants, also presenting some significant challenges to them at the same time. There are many aspects of opportunities and challenges existing in the pulp and paper industry in Thailand despite the past economic growth or current economic slowdown. In this research, the opportunities and challenges, such as building integrated mill, restructuring/consolidation and liberalization were discussed. Opportunities include: low upstream competition, direct investment, plantation management and acquisition/joint venture. The challenges discussed include economies of scale, high switching cost, technology, new competitors, capacity expansion, quality certification and basic training.
