AbstractConstruction is widely accepted as a difficult, dirty and dangerous activity. The number of accident in construction much higher than other industries. There are three times as many fatalities on construction sites in developing countries than industrialized ones. Development of awareness towards human values in industrialized countries like USA, Japan, UK etc. has forced appropriate safety management systems, but it is lacking in developing countries like Nepal. Occupational safety and health is at the very basic level in Nepal. Prevailing practice is not sufficient to promote and safeguard the health and safety condition of the workers. There are laws, that do not work. Safety standards are missing. Technology is becoming advanced and complex and work method demands superior skills but the organization and management of safety in construction firms, projects and sites are oriented to the traditional techniques and manual labors. The main reason behind this seems to be the cost for the safety. For the contractors the cost of compliance of law is more than the cost of non-compliance. This study discusses the existing safety management systems in Nepal with particular emphasis on government regulations, training, insurance policies and compensation systems, and personal protective equipment. The study also recommends some policies for the implementation for the enhancement of occupational safety and health in construction industry of Nepal.
