AbstractMarket analysis of imported dairy inputs in Thailand industrial buyers is carried out here for Foreign Agriculture Service, US Embassy Bangkok among food processors, trade distributors and government agencies through in-depth interviews. Trade statistics were also used here to approximately forecast the future trade momentum. The most important findings from the industrial buyers in Thailand is that they have grown into a value -orientation in their supply management where meeting -the- speck quality will be the threshold to supplier status. They are in the waking conscious towards the demand of extended product features, the whole package of after-sale service , and they are keen on setting up flexible and trustworthy relationship with the suppliers for the mutual benefits. They are still a cautious buyer who wants to reduce or rules out the external unce1iainty as much as they can, but they have evolved into a professionalised business -decision making body where the parental style of management is only nominally existed. These changes prompt the trade opportunity to US suppliers who remains a high quality perception in this market with strong country-of-the -origin effect. The most serious issues the US suppliers need to address is to be long term oriented in serving this market. Potentially this market can be developed into a springboard for future trade development in other parts of this region. The government trade restriction is effectively implemented through quota system and as the Thai government committed to WTO, the trading volume is going up every year and inquota tariff is going down every year. The Thailand will gradually step into a free trade world with less restrictive trade flow. The government trade policy is indiscriminately formulated to every WTO member countries. Dairy imports has been keep growing even if in the economic recessions, and US dairy export to this market is gaining momentum to grow even when the floating exchange rate devaluated Baht. In fact, US supply to this market is spreadheading against its competitors by winning the largest market-share- growth in 1997, two years after the twenty-time-fold leapfrog it made in 1995. This has showed good prospect for future trade growth. The longterm orientation by redefining and repositioning is again recommended here to further penetrate into this dynamic market in Asia.
