AbstractAmong the emerging technologies in the area of computer networks, Active Network is a new concept under extensive research. The idea of active network is to make the whole network active in the sense that packets should carry the code to be executed on the nodes when required. Also the nodes should be made capable to provide the execution environment for the active packets. This work is inspired by this notion. There are many network problems still with no solution and many are do that have the solution but inadequate. Such problems were studied and three were selected for the study, that how they are harmful to the network and what solutions exist for them. The problems studied are congestion, server availability and fragmentation. For their solution, algorithms are given keeping in mind the functionality of Active Network, especially the PLAN environment for active network. The solution for the fragmentation problem is implemented as an example just to see the potential of active network, using the PLAN based over Ocaml in Linux operating system.
