Abstract | Intersection delay in Bangkok causes a lot of economic losses. It increases both road user cost and social cost. One reason for intersection delay is improper setting of traffic signal timings at intersections. The purpose of this study is to develop a delay formula and an optimal cycle time formula for intersections in Bangkok. Delay formula and optimal cycle time formula were developed by using simulation data. The data were simulated by executing simulation program TRAFNETSIM. The program was calibrated by using data from an intersection in Bangkok. Delay formula was developed by modifying the HCM generalized formula for Bangkok traffic conditions. Modification necessitated determining the appropriate parameters of HCM formula. The optimal cycle time formula was developed by two approaches. The first approach is running the simulation to find out the optimal cycle time for various traffic conditions. Then regression analysis is applied to develop the formula. The second approach is using the delay formula and the optimization technique to determine the optimal cycle time, in which total intersection delay was minimized by varying the cycle time. From this study, new delay formula and optimal cycle time formula were developed. Both of them predict almost the same result as Webster's delay and optimal cycle time formula for undersaturation conditions. However, for near saturation and saturation conditions the two formulas give better estimate result than Webster's formulas. |
