Abstract | An available model is improved to simulate the unsteady flow in looped channel system with trapezoidal cross sections. In addition, in the improved model, the rainfall pattern is used as the upstream boundary condition for the channels which are modeled from the paddy fields drained by gravity. The finite difference approximation of the implicit Preissmann Scheme is used for solving numerical solutions of governing equations . In the computer program, the simultaneous linear equation system is solved by the Double Sweep Method. The model is calibrated by using the measured data in the year 1994 and verified by using the measured data in the year 1985. Good agreement between the computed and observed water elevation are obtained. After the calibration and verification, the model is applied to determine the effectiveness of the alternative measures for improving drainage capacity of the system. Some of the proposed measures produced only little or no beneficial effect while others proved to be very effective in decreasing water surface along the main channels as well as reducing the flooded paddy areas. Among the proposed measures, combining channel dredging and constructing inside pumps to drain from paddy fields to the drainage channels is the most suitable measure in reducing flooded area. The second priority was the measure of combining channel dredging and change in land use of the system. |
